about

On September 12, 2023, fifty years on from its founding, the group Laurasia releases its first album in this millennium, "Brotherhood."

Brotherhood unites guitarists John Houshmand and Patrick S. Noonan and violinist Jonathan Levi with brothers and sisters they’ve made music with over the decades – plus some new friends and family. Singers Rebecca Levi, Laura Teller, Alfreda Gerald, and Chinua Hawk, sax and flute player Paul Lieberman, ex-Eurythmics bassist Chucho Merchán and his fellow Colombian percussionist Kike Cuao Jr., New Orleans bass legend James Singleton, drummer Scott Meeder, and the newgrass Helium Brothers join the trio in performances of thirteen LAURASIA songs, refreshed with modern arrangements and new lyrics of stories and adventurers from a Nantucket that nurtured the band when it performed in 1970s and ‘80s at the island’s Brotherhood of Thieves.

Laurasia began its life in September 1973, when Iranian-American fingerstyle guitarist John Houshmand, New York-bred classical-bluegrass violinist Jonathan Levi, and midwestern Americana-rock guitarist Patrick S. Noonan found themselves jamming on the Old Campus of Yale University on their first day of orientation.

Over the years, their music evolved into a “Chaplinesque, classy folk-jazz” (according to one reviewer) that drew inspiration from the multitude of musicians they played with, including flute and sax player Paul Lieberman, who cut his teeth in Brazil performing with Airto Moreira and Flora Purim, Colombian bassist Chucho Merchán, jazz drummer Victor Jones, and banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck – and has drawn comparisons to Leo Kottke, David Grisman, Oregon, The Pentangle, Fairport Convention, Chick Corea, Paul Winter Consort.

Since its birth, LAURASIA has released three albums Noonan Levi & Houshmand, East River Consort, and Undiscovered Country. Its latest release, Brotherhood, features musicians from around the globe who came together—albeit at the distance of a pandemic—to hold hands in music.

Brotherhood will be available in digital and CD formats on all the major global sites.

Laurasia New York, New York

Back when the “new acoustic music” was new, John Houshmand (guitars), Patrick S. Noonan (guitars) and Jonathan Levi (violin) met under a tree in New Haven. Their summertime jam sessions launched a decades-long collaboration, merging the folk, classical, Near East, bluegrass, rock & jazz elements of their individual backgrounds. ... more
